The second book in the life and death series is aimed at players whose ranking is between 10 to 5 kyu. The emphasis is on game-like positions and on basic tactics as well as general guidelines. There are about 1000 problems divided between killing and living. After presenting problems that illustrate a basic technique, such as under the stones, miai (paired moves) tesuji, finding the vital point, first line tesuji, placement, wedging-in tesuji, etc., review sections present problems without announcing the needed tactic. Game records of openings are given to encourage students to think in terms of the whole board and learn basic patterns.
