The first book in the life and death series is aimed at players whose rank is between 15 and 10 kyu. The emphasis is on game-like positions and on basic tactics as well as general guidelines. There are about 1000 problems divided between killing and living. After presenting problems that illustrate a basic technique, such as making dead shapes inside, making an eye false, throw-in, extending eye space, making seki, ko, etc., review sections present problems without announcing the needed tactic. Game records of openings are given to encourage students to think in terms of the whole board and learn basic patterns.
